Prepaid vs Postpaid Electricity Meters

DISCOs are gradually rolling out prepaid, token-based meters as an alternative to the postpaid billing every household has used for decades. Both meter types record exactly the same thing — units consumed — so the entire decision comes down to timing: pay before you use the electricity, or after.

Postpaid, the System You Already Know

You use electricity all month without tracking it, someone (or something automated) reads the meter at cycle-end, and a bill is generated from that reading plus whatever taxes, FPA, and surcharges apply. You then have until the due date to pay it, through any of the usual channels — JazzCash, Easypaisa, a banking app, or in person.

Prepaid, the Token Model

You buy electricity credit ahead of time, either loading it onto a physical token or card you insert into the meter, or topping up a mobile-linked smart prepaid meter remotely. The balance ticks down as you consume, in real time, and supply cuts automatically at zero until the next recharge.

Where the Two Actually Diverge

Set side by side on the things that matter to a household:

• Budgeting: prepaid caps spending at whatever you've topped up, which limits overspending; postpaid can produce a large, less predictable number at month-end
• Convenience: postpaid needs no ongoing attention; prepaid needs regular recharging or you risk a sudden cutoff
• Bill shocks: prepaid spreads the cost as you go, so there's no end-of-month surprise; postpaid bills can spike from a slab jump or a heavier FPA month
• Disconnection: prepaid cuts automatically at zero balance; postpaid only disconnects after missed payments and formal notices
• Visibility: both show consumption close to real time, but prepaid gives an instant balance check with every use

Which One Actually Fits Your Household

If summer bills routinely catch you off guard, prepaid forces the spending to happen incrementally rather than all at once at the end. If you'd rather not think about a running balance — especially while traveling, or overnight — postpaid's monthly cycle is still the more forgiving default for most households.

Not every DISCO or feeder offers prepaid yet; availability is regional. Ask your local DISCO office directly whether it's an option for your connection before assuming either way.

Switching From One to the Other

It's a formal process: apply through your DISCO with your existing consumer or reference number, and expect a meter-replacement visit plus a nominal installation fee.
