Grid-tie only

A pure grid-tied system disconnects automatically when the grid goes down — a safety feature that stops your panels from energizing lines a DISCO crew might be working on. It's also the cheapest and simplest option to install.

The trade-off is direct: without a battery, a grid-tied system gives you zero backup during load shedding. It saves you money on the bill; it does nothing when the power actually goes out.

Hybrid with batteries

A hybrid inverter paired with lithium batteries can keep essential loads — lights, fans, a router — running through an outage. That capability costs significantly more upfront, and batteries have a replacement cycle that adds to the lifetime cost. Size the battery for a realistic handful of backup hours on the loads that actually matter, not for running the whole house on full AC.
