What net metering is meant to do
Net metering lets an eligible consumer install on-site generation, almost always rooftop solar, and connect it to the grid through a certified bi-directional meter. Any surplus you generate offsets what you import over the billing period. It is not a cash sale to the DISCO — the approved rules govern how the offset is credited, and that mechanism is different from a feed-in tariff.
The rules get revised. Treat anything summarized here, including this guide, as background — the binding version is whatever NEPRA has published most recently, plus your own DISCO's current forms and technical standards.
Why your DISCO is central
NEPRA sets the framework; your DISCO applies it on the ground, with its own checks on protection settings, transformer capacity, and meter type. Two households with near-identical system sizes in different cities can end up on very different timelines because of this local layer.
None of that changes who you call for outages, safety issues, or account disputes. That's still your DISCO, not a website. Keep the helpline numbers printed on your bill on hand for exactly this reason.
