Peak Hours & Solar Self-Consumption
Why an evening tariff peak still costs you even with solar on the roof, and what shifting load or adding a small battery actually buys you.

The timing mismatch
Solar output runs strongest roughly 9am to 4pm, shifting with the season and which way your roof faces. Most households' own demand spikes after dark — cooking, cooling, the evening routine — right when expensive on-peak or TOU pricing can kick in on some connections.
Moving flexible loads — the geyser, the washing machine, ironing, pool pumps if you have one — into daylight hours raises how much solar you actually use directly, without adding a single panel. A unit you consume straight from your own array is usually worth more than the export credit you'd get for sending it out, which is why timing matters as much as system size.
What self-consumption actually changes on your bill
Self-consumption is simply the share of what your panels generate that you use as it's produced, rather than exporting it. Push that ratio up and you import fewer units at full tariff, and you lean less on however your DISCO happens to value exports — which is often worth less than the retail rate you'd otherwise pay.
Two houses with identical panel counts can land on noticeably different savings for one reason: one runs its geyser and washing machine at midday, the other in the evening. Before assuming the fix is a bigger system, check whether just rescheduling a few appliances closes the gap.
Practical scheduling ideas
Good candidates for a daytime shift: electric water heating, laundry, dishwashing, ironing, and charging anything with a battery — power banks, cordless tools, an EV if you have one. Some meal-prep tasks can move earlier in the day too without upending anyone's routine.
A smart plug or a basic timer on the inverter or its monitoring app can automate most of this. Some hybrid inverters let you set priority rules — top up a small battery buffer first, export whatever's left. If your evening peak is genuinely unavoidable — dinner, AC after sunset — sizing a battery for just those few hours usually does more for comfort than oversizing the solar array to chase export credit that isn't paid at full value anyway.
