Respect DC and AC zones
Solar arrays carry live DC any time there's daylight — cloudy or not — so combiner boxes and string wiring are for qualified installers only. The AC side, where the inverter output ties into your household circuit and the DISCO meter, needs a licensed electrician for the same reason: it touches your existing wiring.
Know where the AC and DC isolators are, but treat them as service tools for your installer, not a daily on/off switch. Operating or bypassing them without training defeats the point of having them.
Warning signs that mean stop and call a professional
A burning smell, scorch marks, buzzing or crackling near the inverter or combiner box, repeated fault codes, or a small flash at a connector are all reasons to stop using the system immediately and call your installer — not investigate it yourself.
Loose or corroded connectors, damaged insulation, or chew marks from rodents deserve the same urgency. These are common causes of DC arc-fault fires in rooftop installs worldwide, not a cosmetic annoyance to get to later.
What an emergency shutdown means
Most residential inverters have a documented shutdown order: AC isolator first, then DC. Don't assume the array is de-energized just because the inverter's display has gone dark — exposed DC conductors can stay live in daylight even with the inverter powered down.
Keep your installer's emergency number saved. If there's ever a fire risk, treat it like any electrical fire — no water — and tell first responders solar is on the roof, since it can still be live during daylight even after the main supply is cut.
