DC vs AC ratio

It's common for installers to pair a DC array that's rated somewhat larger than the inverter's AC output — a deliberate cost trade-off. Some clipping on the sunniest, coolest days is an acceptable loss if it means better annual yield for less money overall.

Whatever ratio you land on, the inverter's AC size still has to sit inside your DISCO-approved net-metering capacity and your service connection's limits. That constraint comes before the cost-optimization one.

String vs micro

A string inverter covers most simple, unshaded roofs without complication. Micro-inverters or power optimizers earn their extra cost specifically on roofs with partial shading — so be honest about your shading situation before the design gets locked in, not after.
