Solar Payback Period & What Drives ROI

The basic payback calculation, what actually shortens or stretches it, and the costs that get left out of most sales pitches.

Simple payback math

Payback in years is roughly net installed cost divided by annual bill savings. If you're financing the system, fold the interest into that net cost figure — leaving it out understates the real payback period.

Rising tariffs make payback look shorter on paper, but tariff increases aren't guaranteed. Run the same numbers assuming flat tariffs too, so the decision doesn't rest entirely on an assumption you can't control.

Hidden costs

Build in a reserve for eventual inverter replacement, ongoing cleaning, and any insurance you take out. A payback estimate that quietly assumes the inverter never needs replacing isn't a complete one.
