How to Calculate Your Home Electricity Load in Pakistan

Your home's electricity load is the total power it can draw simultaneously — measured in kilowatts (kW) or kilovolt-amperes (kVA). You need to know this number when applying for a new connection, sizing a UPS or solar inverter, or determining whether your current connection handles your actual usage. Calculating it takes 15 minutes and requires nothing more than a list of your appliances.
kW vs kVA: What Your Bill Cares About
Kilowatts (kW) measure real power — the work your appliances actually do. Kilovolt-amperes (kVA) include reactive power, which motors and transformers draw from the system without doing useful work. Most household appliances are rated in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW).
DISCOs state sanctioned loads and new connection limits in kW. Solar inverters and UPS systems are typically rated in kVA. To convert kVA to kW, multiply by the power factor (typically 0.8 for residential use). A 5 kVA inverter can handle approximately 4 kW of load.
Your sanctioned load — the maximum simultaneous draw your connection is authorized for — is printed on your electricity bill, typically near the meter number. Exceeding it can trigger surcharges or require a load enhancement application.
Step-by-Step: Calculate Your Total Load
List every appliance that might run simultaneously during peak use. Peak use in a Pakistani home is typically a hot summer evening: ACs running, fans, lights, refrigerator, TV.
- List each appliance and its wattage (from the label or manual)
- Estimate the maximum number likely running at the same time
- Sum the wattages: total watts ÷ 1,000 = total kilowatts
- Add 20% safety margin for startup surges (motors draw 3–7× their running wattage on startup)
- This gives your peak demand load — what you need your connection and inverter/UPS to handle
Worked Example: A Typical Pakistani House
A 4-bedroom house in Punjab, simultaneous evening peak load:
- 2 × 1.5-ton inverter AC (running, not starting): 2 × 1,500W = 3,000W
- 4 × ceiling fans: 4 × 75W = 300W
- 10 × LED lights: 10 × 10W = 100W
- 1 × refrigerator: 200W
- 1 × TV (LED 55 inch): 100W

Sanctioned Load and Your DISCO
Your electricity connection has an authorized sanctioned load set when it was installed. This figure is printed on your electricity bill. If your calculated peak demand significantly exceeds your sanctioned load, you may be using more power than your connection is authorized for — which can trigger penalties and is the real reason many connections trip or have fuses blow.
To increase your sanctioned load, submit a Load Enhancement Application at your DISCO's SDO. The process involves an inspection, an updated connection agreement, and a higher monthly fixed charge based on the new load. It is required before installing a high-wattage solar inverter that exceeds your current sanctioned load.
Sizing a UPS or Solar Inverter
A UPS or solar inverter must handle your connected load at the moment load shedding begins — and that may be higher than your average consumption. Use the peak simultaneous load calculated above, not your monthly average.
Pakistani households commonly overload UPS units by running ACs through them — a 1-ton non-inverter AC draws 1,200W on startup, which can briefly hit 7,000–9,000W of surge current. If you want to run ACs through an inverter during load shedding, specifically confirm the inverter's surge rating (not just its continuous rating) and the battery capacity that will sustain it.
A 6 kVA hybrid solar inverter connected to a 7.5 kWh lithium battery bank is a common sizing choice for a 4-bedroom Pakistani home wanting to run fans, lights, fridge, and one AC during load shedding. Sizing up is generally safer and more cost-effective than replacing an undersized unit.
