What Is a Unit of Electricity (kWh)?

A unit of electricity in Pakistan means one kilowatt-hour (kWh). Here's exactly what that means, how your meter counts units, and why crossing a unit boundary changes your entire bill.

Every Pakistani electricity bill is built around one number: the units consumed. Everything else — the slab rate, protected or unprotected status, FPA, taxes — flows from that single figure. Understanding what a unit actually is makes the rest of the bill straightforward.

One Unit = One Kilowatt-Hour

A unit of electricity, written on your bill as 'units' or 'kWh', is the amount of energy consumed by a one-kilowatt (1,000-watt) appliance running for exactly one hour. That's the definition — and it stays the same whether your bill comes from MEPCO, LESCO, FESCO, or any other DISCO.

The word 'kilowatt-hour' is just the product of power (kilowatts) and time (hours). A 1,000-watt appliance for 1 hour = 1 kWh = 1 unit. A 500-watt appliance running for 2 hours also equals 1 unit. The energy transferred is the same either way.

How Your Meter Counts Units

Your electricity meter is essentially a very precise energy counter. It watches the current flowing into your home every second, multiplies by the voltage, and accumulates the result as watt-hours. When the total reaches 1,000 watt-hours, the display ticks up by one unit.

At the end of a billing cycle — usually 30 days — the meter reader records the current display. The previous reading is subtracted. The difference is your monthly consumption in units. That figure goes straight to PITC and is what you see on the bill.

  • Old dial meters: read left to right, always round down if the pointer is between numbers

Common Appliances and the Units They Use

Once you know that 1 unit = 1,000 watts for 1 hour, you can estimate any appliance's consumption by dividing its wattage by 1,000 and multiplying by the hours used.

  • Ceiling fan (75W): 1 hour = 0.075 units, running 12 hours/day = about 27 units/month
  • LED bulb (9W): 1 hour = 0.009 units, 4 bulbs × 6 hours/day = about 6.5 units/month
  • Refrigerator (150W average): about 108 units/month running constantly
  • 1-ton non-inverter AC (1,200W): 1 hour = 1.2 units, 8 hours/day = about 288 units/month
  • 1.5-ton inverter AC (varies 400–1,500W): typically 100–180 units/month at moderate use
  • Water pump (750W): 1 hour = 0.75 units, 2 hours/day = about 45 units/month
  • Washing machine (500W): 1 hour = 0.5 units, used 10 times/month ≈ 5 units/month
  • Electric geyser/heater (2,000W): 1 hour = 2 units — the highest single-session draw in most homes

Why Units Matter So Much in Pakistan

Pakistan's residential electricity tariff uses a slab system: the price per unit is not flat. The first 100 units in a month cost less than the next 100, which cost less than the next 100 after that. This means that adding even a few units can push your total consumption into a more expensive bracket — and unlike most tax systems, the new higher rate applies to your entire bill, not just the units over the boundary.

This is why a household that uses 202 units in a month can pay dramatically more than one that used 198. The two extra units triggered a slab jump. Understanding units — and watching your meter during the final days of a billing cycle — is the most direct way to avoid that outcome.

Additionally, households that stay at or under 200 units every month for six consecutive months qualify for 'protected' status, which unlocks significantly lower slab rates set by NEPRA. Every unit you consume is either moving you toward or away from that threshold.

Units vs Watts vs Kilowatts — Clearing Up the Confusion

Watts and kilowatts measure power — the rate at which electricity is being consumed right now. Units (kWh) measure energy — the total amount consumed over time. Your air conditioner is rated at 1,200 watts (1.2 kilowatts) of power, but how many units it uses depends on how long you run it.

Your DISCO cares about units, not watts. Your electricity connection's sanctioned load is measured in kilowatts (how much you can draw simultaneously), but your bill is based on kilowatt-hours (how much you actually used over the month). Both matter — exceeding your sanctioned load can trigger fines or forced load reduction — but only kWh drives the bill amount.

How to Verify the Units on Your Bill

You can cross-check the units figure on your bill by reading your own meter. Write down today's reading and compare it to the previous reading printed on your current bill — the difference should match the units charged. If you catch a significant discrepancy, take your meter photos and the current bill to your DISCO's Subdivision Office (SDO) immediately. Disputes are easier to resolve before the next billing cycle.
